Microdiscectomy is the specific technique that we use within microsurgery to remove herniated discs. It is the most practiced method in spinal surgery.
The procedure is usually performed through a 3-4 cm incision over the desired region or space. This is done by removing the muscle and tissue until the posterior vertebral lamina is reached where we locate the ligamentum flavum.
We proceed to open it, identifying the epidural space where we will observe the neurological structures. Once the dura and the root are visible, the nerve root is mobilized to see the herniated disc material and possible bone osteophytes that may cause compression of the neurological structures.
